I googled to no avail, but maybe someone has seen this. There are a ton of lifted/skid plated Golfs and Jettas around my town, I want to lift the Benz wagon 4 inches so I have no issues in the snow, and you know, because I think it would be bad ass. Maybe put some steelies with larger tires on there too. Ever seen it?
Not sure the suspension geometry or components would support such a lift either, but figured I would ask.
Oh and thanks K-Roll for the reminder I wanted to ask this.

No, I've never seen a lifted W210. Thank you for enlightening me on this, my life actually feels a bit more complete. I don't like the rims.. Ford?!

that is an Aussie ford right there!

Looks to be far more doable than the W124 4matic, which had a specialized spring with a stretch in it to clear the front CVs, and had an engine sump-mounted front diff. The W210 would likely need you to shim the front diff downward slightly, and swapping the lower bracket on the strut to one a bit taller- and, done. It won't allow *much* lift, but an inch or even three might be possible.

I wouldnt even bother with the w124 with the perpetual issues those have and lack of parts. Though it was brilliant when it worked. Interesting...

Moving the diff isn't going to happen because the axle goes through the pan, like a Skyline or BMW iX. Also, the short front axles will limit your travel, because you don't want to put the CV's in bind. Wouldn't be hard to make up some ball joint spacers to keep the geometry square, though, so if you shim the front shocks down safely it could be do-able. The rear would be easy to do with lift blocks over the springs. Primitive Rally does stuff like that for Subarus, and it'd be easy to have a machine shop spin up some delrin spacers to your spec. 1-2 inches should be feasible, and the alignment is completely adjustable front & rear so you should be able to compensate ok.

as always, you are the most informed out of the bunch. Thanks, that makes it sound more doable. With a 2in lift that would be fine on stock tires and rims, maybe a +1" or so. Have to check front wheel clearance on lock.
On another note, maybe you can answer me something. Is there supposed to be a nut on the front of the A/C compressor in the middle of the pulley? I have been chasing demons in the A/C, and all is good except for this last thing. Had an ECT code through HVAC diagnostics and a slightly low charge. Both of those rectified, and the magnet on the compressor is trying to engage (it is energized and STRONG). Noticed there was no nut in the center of the pulley, just a splined shaft (as far as I can see back) sound about right? I just ask because everyone says to look and see if the nut is spinning.

Yep, should be a bolt in the middle. 10mm head, I think. That'd be really weird if it wasn't there for some reason, and if so I'm surprised the clutch hasn't worked its way off. If it's missing, the clutch probably isn't grounded. The center of the shaft should be threaded, and the bold is a 6x1.0 thread, maybe 20mm long IIRC. As far as refrigerant loss, it may just have bled out due to age, but the common leak points are the hose from condenser to drier at the left front, and the expansion valve.

yeah I need to take a hard look at it in a bit. It was minimally low, said 4 bar through the sensor which is still enough to engage the clutch. I will let you know what I find on this! Thanks as always. Where are you located? I owe you some beer

yeah the bolt was gone, and verified it is a 6x1.0 thread, 20mm seems too long. What does this connect? I just want to make sure it isnt a push hole for the shaft and I am going to separate the shaft out of it or something dumb

Maybe 10mm depth, then. Not very long. It just holds the clutch hub onto the shaft.

European cars sold in Eastern Europe sometimes came with a somewhat lifted body out of the factory due to the roads being terrible so maybe Mercedes itself can provide you with an answer/solution.

ah ok now I see what I am missing, the bolt spun out of there and the clutch face/hub is missing. The compressor turns nice and free, and the coil throws out a good amount of magnetism, but it looks like I have to hunt up that one component. Damn

Wow, that's a weird one, can't say I've seen it. You might have luck at a salvage yard. I just looked up the compressor, it was used on loads of C, E, & S class cars from '95-on so that should broaden your search range a bit.

yeah I crossed that compressor number to 00+ VW Passats and Audi A4/A6, BMW E39. Now to convince one to sell me the plate itself. I am going to pull the engine shield tonight and see if I get lucky and it is sitting there with a pile of shims right next to it :)

The front subframe does a pretty good job of retaining things that fall off the front of the engine on these things; I've seen them come in with other mechanic's tools dropped during previous repairs still sitting in the pan under the engine. Here's hoping!
Hey, question for you: I have no idea how to get authorship, is it a recommendation thing? I'd love to share some stuff from the shop & races.

for you, I will personally make sure this happens. It isnt a knock, there is a thread to search out, but it is my pleasure to make a post on your behalf. Let you know when this is done!

all set, you have authorship on oppo. If you have any issues posting let me know. Thanks again for all of your help. If you are on facebook at all, come friend me here , I will send you some beer!

Sweet, thanks! I did search, but loads of threads came up & I must have missed it. It bugs me when people ask things blindly without searching too :)

dude no problem, old (good) forum habits right there. My pleasure

That right there might be the best temptation I've had yet to join those Facebooks. I'm a card-carrying beer dork. :)

nice! Out in Cali land. Where you can get beer from New Belgium brewery...They haven't made it to New England yet. When I lived in Denver I drank the heck out of their stuff

I can send you some of that, too. Their Ranger IPA is a favorite of mine, and some of their more interesting stuff has been making its way here lately.

Just following up, went to my local Benz repair shop who always has a parts car around. Got the drive/spring plate, nut, shims, an H6 running light bulb, and the star for the hood for $20!
